On any given night at Vinny's, you'll see 400-600 people receiving meals. This includes adult men and women, teens, and families with children. The fact is, more than 95% of these folks are homeless - living in temporary shelters or on the streets, at a makeshift campsite or in their cars.
In Salt Lake County:
- 2,500 - 3,000 of our citizens are homeless (0.52% of the population)
- Families with children make up 40% of this count (and this number is 13% higher than last year!)
- 1 in 50 school age children are homeless
When you don't know where your next meal is coming from, you have "hunger insecurity." Utah is ranked fourth in the nation for the highest rate of very low food security in the nation. About 400,000 Utahns risk missing one meal every day. "Hunger insecurity" affects far more than the homeless population. One in ten Utahns and one in eight children live in poverty.
